About Mrs. Kendra

Hi! I'm Mrs. Kendra Bernens, and I love being a part of the wonderful team of teachers at Lafayette Academy. This will be my 8th year teaching altogether, and my second at LAP. I am looking forward to watching my class of 3 year olds grow socially and academically.

I grew up in Batesville, IN, which is about 2 hours from here. I am a 2004 graduate of Batesville High School and a 2008 graduate of Indiana University Bloomington. (Go HOOSIERS!) Then, in the summer of 2011, I completed my Master's Degree at Indiana University Southeast.

I mentioned that this is my 8th year of teaching. (I can't believe it's gone by that quickly.) My first 2 years of teaching took place at Greensburg Elementary school in Greensburg, IN. My first year of teaching was spent teaching second grade, and my second year there I worked as a part of the Title 1 team and trained in Reading Recovery. The knowledge I gained from my Reading Recovery training was a great asset to have in the second grade classroom, but I know it will greatly benefit me as a preschool teacher, too. My last 4 years of elementary teaching were in second grade at Holy Family School in New Albany. Working there was a blessing and it allowed me to meet many wonderful people in the area.

My husband, Kris, and I are the proud parents of our little guy, Tristan, who turned 1 in April. He is going to become a big brother in August or September of 2015. We're looking forward to welcoming his younger brother, Sawyer, into our family!

Our house is also the home of 2 playful mutts, and I say that with love. Lou is a Redbone Coonhound mix, and just turned 5 in July. He is full of love, and I believe he thinks he's a small lap dog trapped in a big dog's body. Kris and I are so impressed on how well he has taken on the "big brother" role since we brought Tristan home.

Our other dog is Bree. She is a sweetheart, but don't let her fool you, she does have a sneaky side. Bree is a Sheltie mix and just turned 4 in July. Since having Tristan we have nicknamed her "Nana" because she's a mother hen.

I believe in living life to the fullest! I love to travel, camp, hike, boat, and garden, amongst so many other things. I love trying new things and hope to pass that on to my preschoolers.

I became a teacher for the fact that every day is different. Not only do I get to watch my students learn and grow, but my students teach me a lot as well. My job is very rewarding and I like that I can be a positive influence in the lives of children.

I am anticipating a successful and fun year with your child. By working together we can accomplish that!
